Pallets - US

(National Wood Pallet & Container Association, unless otherwise noted)

1,900,000,000 pallets in use in the US

400,000,000 new pallets are needed each year

174,000,000 used pallets are repaired or recycled

225,000,000 pallets are sent to landfills each year with 35,000,000 of those pallets subsequently pulled from the solid waste stream at landfills where they ar reprocessed into other value-added products.

Estimated that there are 7 pallets in use for every person in the U.S. (Philip Araman, USDA Forest Service 1999)

70% of all new pallets will be reused or recycled

94% of pallet users report that they recycle their pallets and 65% reuse them within their own system (NWPCA’s Industry Survey 1997)

14% of all wood fiber harvested each year in the US is used in pallets (USDA Forest Service)

Paper - US

Each person in the United States uses 500 pounds of paper annually

About 45% of paper consumed in the US is recovered for recycling

45,500,000 tons (1 ton=2000 pounds) of paper were recovered for recycling in 1998

More paper is recovered each year for recycling than goes to landfills

Wood Preserving

Missouri Wood Preservers produce $95,000,000 of treated wood products each year

Missouri wood preservers directly employ 338 people and are paid wages over $5,000,000 (management, sales and clerical are not included)

Spend $61,000,000 for raw material and approximately $11,000,000 for other materials, supplies and utilities.

Missouri preserved products: poles, posts, treated lumber, railroad ties, timbers, and other.

94% of sales are in Missouri (estimated 1991 survey)
