Utilization& Residue
Wood Residue/Waste
-Produces 2.1 million tons of “residue” a year (slabs,
edging, sawdust, and bark)
-40% of residue is used to produce charcoal; 47% is used
to produce livestock bedding, mulch, and fuel; and only 13% of the residue is
unused. (MO Dept. of Conservation)
Utilization
-In 1950 we only used the equivalent of 70% of each tree
harvested. Today, thanks to dramatic increases in recycling and technological
improvements, we use 95% of each tree that we harvest. (USDA Forest Service)
