1st Stop – View demonstration of direct seeding of acorns and walnut seeds (weather permitting).  Discuss site suitability for walnuts using USDA’s “black walnut suitability index” web based application.

2nd Stop – View three grade/veneer oak stands.  Stand 1 was burned prior to harvest in 2004 to stimulate oak seedling regeneration.  Stand 2 was harvested in 2006 as part of a study of costs/revenues from selling undesirable trees as pulp during a regular harvest.  Stand 3 was harvested in 2009 with an emphasis on aesthetics/wildlife.

3rd Stop – At farmstead.  View tulip poplar and black cherry seedlings being inter-planted into a 2009 direct seeded acorn/walnut  planting.  (weather permitting)  View/discuss collection, treatment, stratification and storage methods for acorns and walnuts.
