Advance Hardwood Lumber Drying

The demand for less degrade, better color, and increased throughput, etc is constantly increasing for today's dry kiln operator and dry yard supervisor.  Often these experienced operators must be able to explain and/or justify how certain drying practices impact production and quality. Advanced training can typically assist them in meeting these goals. This advanced lumber drying course is designed for experienced operators and supervisors drying hardwood lumber using steam or dehumidification dry kilns, specifically addressing the Missouri dominant wood species-Oak. The program will cover advance techniques for the efficient and effective operation of air-drying yards and dry kilns.  The program will also include special techniques for drying oak, methods for evaluating your drying practices, how to modify schedules to meet your objectives, monitoring and controlling the drying process and an open forum for answering common drying problems.

Instructor

Dr. Bond has extensive experience in working closely with the wood industry as an extension specialist and consultant in the areas of lumber drying, wood and moisture relations, and sawmill efficiency. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products at Virginia Tech. He provides extension programming for the hardwood industry, conducts drying research, and teaches a lumber manufacturing class to undergraduate students. For more information www.woodscience.vt.edu
